EQUANS are recruiting for an Electrical Design Engineer to be based in Grimsby DN31. This is a permanent full-time role working 37.5 hours per week. On offer is a salary of £37,000 – £40,000 benefits package.

General Overview

EQUANS is North East Lincolnshire Council’s regeneration delivery partner, providing planning, highways, environmental and other services to the Council on an outsourced basis.

We are working with our partner to support their aspirations to achieve Net Zero Carbon, and the successful candidate will need to demonstrate experience working within renewable industries and support with the delivery of programmes such as Public Sector De-carbonisation, to come up with renewable solutions alongside the wider professional services team.

You will be an Electrical Design Engineer with a proven history of managing your own schemes, whilst directing others and taking responsibility for wider business and commercial challenge. Degree qualified as a minimum, you will also be a chartered engineer or working in the realms of chartered engineering.

What will you deliver?

Key Accountabilities:

Working as part of the Professional Services Team and deliver inspiring projects
Being a proactive participant in the delivery of Professional Services
Developing detailed electrical designs and specifications for buildings, Highways and infrastructure
Project delivery, including overseeing input from others including external suppliers.
Delivering projects within budget, on time to the required standard.
Attendance at design team, client and site meetings as required to give project updates, share risks and opportunities.
Responsibility for the design quality and profitable delivery of own projects.
Timely reporting of project/office financial information to contribute to meeting budget at team level which supports in timely invoicing forward planning of resources to achieve targets.
Co-ordinating and working with others to maintain design quality and consistency across teams.


Interpreting client utility requirements and understanding scheme drawings and considering the impact on existing utility assets.
Evaluating utility assets as shown on utility record drawings and preparing feasibility assessments against client proposals. Calculating anticipated load requirements for a range of building and structure types.
Writing detailed, accurate reports. Presenting client schemes to relevant utilities and procuring relevant costs and designs.
Preparing detailed electrical designs and full specifications of works working collaboratively with other specialists’ designers for a co-ordinated approach for successful delivery of projects. Performing the coordination of technical aspects of utility works between the client and the utility companies.
Reviewing utility designs against client designs, challenging utility costs where appropriate to identify potential risks and savings.
Client design meetings and co-ordination of multiple utilities on-site to enable best value solutions to be implemented.
Advising on procurement strategies for new utility connections, diversionary works and disconnections.
Liaising with utility companies with regards to obtaining utility easement and wayleave information. Coordination of utility works on behalf of clients, ensuring that works are completed in line with client programs.
Managing the utility aspects of projects with a range of values and requirements. Simultaneously managing numerous projects, chasing utilities for responses to ensure project milestones are met.
Undertaking NRSWA 1991 C1-C9 processes
Developing and maintaining strong, positive working relationships with commissioners, their teams/partners and across service areas as appropriate
Being prepared to work flexibly to meet business needs, and undertaking such other duties as may be reasonably expected at this level.

Who are we looking for?


Relevant qualification – Bachelors or master’s in electrical engineering.
Hold a degree and/or an equivalent professional qualification in an engineering, project management or similar
Health Safety and Environmental Awareness.
Experience in effectively supervising, motivating and developing high performing teams
Experience of working within a Local Authority or Partnership organisation)
Experience of dealing with members of the public and elected members with confidence & credibility
Strong oral and written communication skills
Experience in using Microsoft Office, including the use of Teams, e-mail and electronic calendar

What you need to succeed in this role:

Ideally a Chartered Engineer, an Incorporated Engineer, or working towards full membership with a relevant institution.
A solid and thorough understanding of and experience in working in the utility industry, preferably in a business-to-business service delivery environment with experience in technical aspects of utility works, including loading calculations, network reinforcement and design, along with the ability to understand the impact of utility constraints on a scheme.
Experience of working in a utility procurement and management role, or a background in fulfilling such a role working for a house builder or develop, with a detailed knowledge of the prescribed processes for procuring utility works.
Have an understanding or experience of working in the engineering industry.
The ability to demonstrate knowledge of renewable technologies in terms of utility connections and considerations for developer connections.
An appreciation of relevant legislation, including the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991 as well as other guidance that are specific to the utility sector such as HAUC, HSG47 etc.
Demonstrable experience with accurate report writing, conveying technically complex scenarios and solutions.
Able to work as part of a multidisciplinary project team.
Computer literate and experienced in all Microsoft applications.
Full driving licence.
