Equans is looking for a Principal Highways Design Engineer to join our team in Grimsby on a permanent basis. This is a full time role working 37.50 hours per week. On offer is a salary banding of £45,000 – £50,000 depending upon skills & experience benefits package.

General Overview

This is a fantastic opportunity to join Equans’ Professional Services function, a multi-disciplinary design consultancy including Civil, Structures, Infrastructure and Build.

Equans is North East Lincolnshire Council’s long-term Regeneration Partner delivering a number of services on their behalf, including the Highways Design Service. We are proud of our established, successful and award-winning partnership – our team having secured a number of high profile regeneration and infrastructure projects, as well as being responsible for delivery of the Local Transport Plan for North East Lincolnshire. This role supports the team in their delivery of a first-class service to its customers and fully contributes to delivering sustainable development and growth in North East Lincolnshire.

You will be part of the Professional Services team, dealing with a variety of infrastructure projects including highway maintenance to large capital civil and structural projects. Examples of previous projects have been a number of multi million regeneration schemes within Grimsby and Cleethorpes enhancing the public realm, and delivery of new trunk roads and industrial estate access roads to promote business development in the area.

You will join an expanding team of engineers, technicians, apprentices and site support staff. Enthusiastic and dedicated, you will have demonstrable experience in design and management of highway projects, the ability to supervise people and projects and work independently.

Key Responsibilities

As Principal Highway Engineer, have overarching design and engineering responsibility for all members of the team Highways Design Team.

Where appointed, support the Project Managers in the delivery of major schemes.
Manage and co-ordinate workload of the team to achieve project deliverables within the agreed time, quality, and financial objectives.
Develop design briefs in collaboration with clients and form project agreements,
Co-ordinate design work with an innovative approach considering conservation, sustainability, and budget.
Lead and contribute to design reviews ensuring design quality, monitor emerging legislation and engineering standards.
Be competent in Autodesk Civil 3D design.
Programme manage schemes through the design, tender and construction process, monitor and report on deliverables, programmes, risk and manage change control.
Produce and co-ordinate tender packages for works, this includes; pre-construction phase health and safety plans, bill of quantities, drawings and contractual documentation.
Ensure the scheme design complies with the specification and agreed programme and designs comply with health and safety regulations, CDM requirements and are assessed for environmental impact.
Liaise with clients, stakeholders and third parties as necessary and deal with complex or contentious issues in a positive and professional manner. Communicate and co-ordinate with other members of the project team. Communicate clearly and provide regular progress reports, attend site and project board meetings and consultation events.
Participate in and where necessary lead on, scheme consultation.
Engage in early contractor involvement on necessary projects.
Undertake on-site inspections, provide feedback and solutions where required.
Deliver the service in line with quality management procedures and demonstrate an understanding of the principles behind these.
Support the Design Consultancy in delivering improved services, and promote and instil Equans values.
Undertake any other duties which may reasonably be expected at this level.

Qualifications or Required Experience

Qualified to degree level or equivalent.
Chartered status with a relevant professional body or working towards Chartership is desirable but not essential.
A proven track record in the Highways and Transportation and or infrastructure industry.
Ability to work on own initiative with limited management.
Experience, knowledge and understanding of drafting and administrating NEC3 & 4 contracts.
Experience, knowledge and understanding of DMRB design standards and Local Authority procedures in relation to the design and construction of highway schemes under section 38 and 278 of the Highways Act.
Detailed understanding of Health and Safety legislation, working experience of Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 and understanding of legislative aspects of project delivery.
Proficient in the use of industry standard computer software including AutoCAD, Key Signs, Key Lines and Auto Tracks. Knowledge and experience of using 3D highway modelling software.
Commercial awareness and experience of working within a multi-disciplinary design environment.
Ability to communicate confidently and clearly, conduct effective negotiations with client, stakeholders, subcontractors and third parties.
Demonstrate a high level of initiative in managing workload, be self-motivated, have strong interpersonal skills and the attitude, conduct and demeanour to reflect Equans values.
